First of all...their names:
REFEREE: Curtis Marouelli
REFEREE 2: Justin Brown
Yes, there were 2 refs for the game last night. First time we've seen that in the Annex this season. Both had their whistles crammed securely up their asses all game...until overtime. There were only two penalties called in the third period...both on the Cyclones. One of those was a highly questionable "roughing" call on Phil Sbrocchi for throwing a beautiful elbow at the unsuspecting dome of Rob "Mouthy" Sich. Mouthy went down. And he went down hard. It was beautiful. The crowd of 1,002 let Phil know how much they appreciated the effort.
With under three minutes to go in regulation, the Bugs tied the score and into overtime we went. Three on three hockey for five minutes...if no one scores then they go to a shootout...the most exciting part of hockey (besides the fighting...and the beer...and the groupies). So both teams are playing hard...the crowd is into it, and all of the sudden at the 2:49 mark of overtime one of the ref's whistles pops out his butt and he puts it in his mouth...and blows it! What? On the Cyclones of course. The Bugs proceed to score almost immediately on the 4-on-3 powerplay...game over. Nice work Curtis and Justin.
Other notes of interest from the game:
..."Rocket" Richard was in Mouthy's face all night. When this first happened, it prompted Allan Sirois to come to the defense of the Cyclone's leading scorer by promptly knocking that sombitch Sich on his ass.
...the Cyclones managed to keep the Flying Ruberto Brothers in check all night.
Next up:
The Cyclones will welcome the Columbus Cottonmouths to the Annex tonight at 7:30pm. The Cyclones will be wearing pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. Proceeds, at least some of them, will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It's a great cause. I hope our fans aren't looking past pink jersey night to the beauty pageant on Saturday night. We need to focus! One game at a time!
